Carolinas HealthCare System Blue Ridge (CHS Blue Ridge) strives to provide financial assistance based on a patient’s ability to pay while modeling at all times the CHS core value of “Caring”. The CHS Blue Ridge programs are designed to ensure assistance is provided to patients demonstrating a financial need and to ensure CHS Blue Ridge complies with any required Federal or State regulations related to financial assistance.

These are the programs available at CHS Blue Ridge:

1) Automatic Discount for Uninsured Patients
2) Financial Assistance
3) Hardship Settlement

Uninsured Discount

Uninsured patients will receive a 50% discount off gross charges on all medically necessary services. This is applied automatically and no action is needed by the patient to receive this discount. This program is available to all uninsured patients.

Financial Assistance

Uninsured patients may be contacted by a financial counselor to determine if they are eligible for other coverage opportunities. For patients not contacted, they can contact a financial counselor directly to discuss eligibility. If a patient fully cooperates with this process and no coverage is available, their account will be evaluated for financial assistance based on their income as compared to federal poverty guidelines (FPG). Patients with income less than or equal to 200% of FPG will receive a 100% discount. Patients between 201% and 400% of the FPG will qualify for partial discounts. Interest free payment options are available to assist patients in paying their remaining balance. Patients can contact their assigned financial counselor with questions or to request an application. Hardship Settlement

This program is designed to assist patients who have had a catastrophic medical event regardless of their insurance coverage that has resulted in very large hospital bills in comparison to their financial resources. Patients seeking a hardship settlement should inquire about this program by calling the customer service department after receiving their first statement.

Financial Assistance Cost

“Community benefit” is an industry term that refers to the total cost of providing financial assistance to uninsured and underinsured patients; subsidizing Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements; and financing other services that address vital needs but do not pay for themselves. For its year ended 2019, CHS Blue Ridge total Community Benefit was $84,550,662, which was 32.8% of its operating expenses. This amount includes $14,655,423 in financial assistance costs provided by CHS Blue Ridge as defined by and required to be disclosed by NC law.
